FTAO `The Builder` Wooden Doors
7 Answers
I have been given two new interior, unwrapped, four panel doors, and will want them painted. Can you give me some advise on producing a good appearance to them? Would I need to rub them down, use primer undercoats before gloss, etc etc? TIA

Before you start give them a light rub down to get off any rough bits that may be on them. Then put knotting on any knots to stop bleeding if they are softwood doors. After this give coat of primer or if hardwood give coat of aluminium oxide primer, 2 coats of undercoat then coat of gloss. Rub down slightly between coats and before glossing give them a rub over with a tack cloth which will pick up all the tiny bits that you will not see before glossing but will see on the finish. Take a look at this site and it will give you a good idea on the order in which to do the painting. Good luck.

Hi all, thanks for that Builder. I forgot to put to use a decent paint brush as this will help in getting that good finish that you want. I have always used Hamilton perfection brushes myself as the decorator I was taught by used them. When new the bristles are quite long so are ideal for primer and undercoat then after a bit of use they get a bit shorter so are better for glossing. If you want to really splash out on brushes though you could go for Purdy's which are the tops in the painters world.
