What 'Coals' for a Gas Fire.?

I do not use gas in my home and my knowledge is very limited on domestic gas appliances. However, my sister-in-law has in her lounge an inset 'living flame' gas fire and a Service Engineer has suggested that the 'coals' should now be replaced.

My question therefore is somewhat threefold......Where 'on-line' would be a good place to buy 'coals' ; do they have to be of a particular form and/or material for a Valor, model 942 ; and is any special lay-out necessary for them, when placed onto the fire bed. (Unfortunately, s-i-l is unable to find her user manual.)

Consequently, any suggestions will be very much appreciated.

Hi boxtops and rowanwitch..........Thanks for having responded on this matter.

E/bay certainly has a lot of 'coals' on offer. Unfortunately, none of them would appear to be suitable.for my sister-in-law's gas fire.

I have now been in contact with 'Valor' and have been informed that it is important for part No.5115720 to be purchased; because different 'coals' are installed in their individual gas fires. However the firm is unable to supply direct and has suggested that I contact a local supplier of its products. Consequently, I have made a number of telephone calls to 'Valor' outlets and other firms; only to be told that it is important to have the correct 'coals' for the appliance concerned.

It it the case that I have Googled for the part, but every firm I have contacted 'on-line' is unable to supply. Accordingly it would appear that my s-i-l will have no alternative to that of arranging for our local 'Parts Centre' or other gas appliance outlet in our area to obtain and supply the required replacement.

for all inset coal type fires, you MUST always replace the coals with the correct ones for that make and model of fire, you never ever add extra coals or use ones not intended for that fire. And yes the coals have to be arranged as per the manufacturers instructions otherwise the fire may not burn properly and produce Carbon Monoxide.
Try ringing Gas-on-spares of Halesowen, if they can't help you no-one can. For a set of coals and the fuel bed tho expect to pay around £75-£100.
Gas-on-spares may require the G.C number of the fire, this is normally found on a large metal data badge which is hidden underneath the burner and usually chained to the metal fire-box.

oh forgot to say contact Baxi who own Valor and ask them for a copy of the instruction manual including coal layout plan to be sent to you

Thanks gucciman... It's only now that I have picked-up your postings.

What you have said is exactly the info which I require and will pass it on to my sister-in-law. Furthermore, I will try to ensure that she observes all the advice which you have given. In the meanwhile I will try to get a copy of the manual from Baxi,together with details of the 'coals' layout.

However, I still remain somewhat mystified by the fact that the 'coals' need to be changed on a fire which has only been in use for less than two years. My wife Viv has spoken to a number of her friends and our next door neighbour who have similar gas fires and they have not changed the 'coals'......Perhaps they should in view of the possibility that they have now become soot encrusted and could be responsible for producing carbon monoxide.
