Fridge freezer inside area???Why the gaps?

I am looking at buying a new fridge freezer and have noticed something about the insides of the freezer compartments that is puzzling me slightly. Some of them have a bit of a gap either behind the draws or at the sides,so obviously this makes the outer size of the fridge freezer bigger. As size does matter,I am wondering are the freezers with gaps inside them that way for a very good reason,ie they work more efficiently or something like that,OR is it just so the makers can say the inner size is larger than what you can actually use?
Hope I put this across clearly!

I am just amazed that we are actually considering buying a brand new one, never had one before and just am a bit nervous about spending all that money!
Thanks askyourgran
To help air circulation (improves efficiency)
To stop ice build-up sticking drawers shut.
If you are intersted about running costs .. and freezers run high on the list ...
Look for one with thick walls ... Insulation is better. AEG (OKO Arctis) and a few others do them.
I have an LG freezer it's one of the ice free ones- no defrosting. Shop around, I eventually went to Comet for the best deal. Some of them had really small fridge compartments and whopping freezers, but this one seems OK.
It's probably that those with less space are frost free. I made the mistake once of going by outer dimensions and not really looking at the freezer part, only to find it was so limited in space it was effectively useless.

I spent a happy couple of hours in Comet the other night looking at freezers, but I was surprised at the difference in the inside space.Got my eye on one, just want to be 100% before buying it(I would say which one but I cannot remember the model number and I don't think 'the smaller silver one on the middle row' would mean that much to you folks!)
if you remember the model, try googling it plus the word "review" and see what comes up.
