I am a collector of dolls houses ( the collectors type) I have decided to have a go a making one myself from scratch. The question is, I have brought myself a router thing to do the joints in the MDF , any tips on best way of using this tool

Get a book on Router techniques.
Direction of travel always against the rotation of the cutter.
You need a good fence .. often attachment for the router is not good enough. Inverted table is really the best for sheet/long mouldings.
Would have thought a router would be a bit large for that sort of work.
I take it that it is a 1/4" collett?

Try a woodworking evening class...housemate made first dolls house as her project piece....it might be cheaper than wasting kit and materials while you practice. Good luck though...I am still on my first one...made from a kit afraid to say but its given me hours of fun...especially going to the dolls house fairs....

After following Albags advice, practice each routing beforehand on scrap to make sure you have got it right. Think about each job, make sure the cable won't snag, make sure the bit is secure regularly, unplug before changing bits, be extra careful at beginning and end of a run, if necessary clamp on an extended edge for the fence to follow beyond the workpiece. REMOVE THE COLLET SPANNER and lots lots more.

wear a mask if you are working close up with MDF as prolonged exposure to the dust from it can be potentially carcinogenic

Routing is a skill where you need to know what you are doing, and what the router is capable of. To start with little or no knowledge can be exceptionally dangerous. Get yourself the router bible - ''The New Router Handbook'' by Patrick Spielman. It'll tell you more about routering than you'll ever need to know, but will end up with you working safely. Normally, the book costs around £14.00 on Amazon, but you can get a copy cheap as chips on Abebooks, here...

Hi blackie - I know you want to make your own dolls house, but as you're also a collector, wondered if you'd seen the doll's house in Asda. They do pink ones in our local store, or you can buy cream ones (which I prefer) online. They are reduced from £75 to £35.

They also sell two different sets of furniture to go with them & are reduced from £25 to £12 per set! A bargain I would say!

(I popped in there earlier & ended up buying the furniture for our youngest Granddaughter & will order the cream house online - Christmas wil soon be upon us)!
