How do you get rid of greasy smears on a polished table top, I have tried furniture polish but it made the problem worse

you can get stuff called furniture reviver in posh furniture shops. If you haven't already done it, don't try washing up liquid on a french polished surface!

Sprinkle on talcum powder, (Fullers Earth is better though not so readily available), and cover it with a few paper hankies or soft toilet tissue. Place a warm (Not hot!!) iron on the tissues, and the talc and tissues will absorb the grease.
