I need to dig out and remove a mature pampas grass plant can anyone offer any tips or advise on the best way to do this.It looks a daunting task, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Then its just hard work with a spade although I have resorted to an axe for a large specimen. I hope you have some way of disposing of the large lump of root you will end up with.
Finally get a chair and have a good rest perhaps with a celebratory drink you will deserve it!

further to above answers if you can borrow / buy a trenching spade it will make life easier ie

After Both my kids , wife and myself being cut to death by the Pampas I too set about removing it , I trimmed it down , put some petrol on it and burnt it to the floor , Then dug out the root ball, My near neighbour asked where it had gone , I said its in my barrow, he asked if he could have it , and now even after all that abuse I can still see it in his garden , his centre peice !! In a good setting they are beautiful, In a normal garden they are damn rite dangerouse to whoever gets near it .........
