Can't delete from Philips mp3 player

This is a Philips GoGear vibe.
I use this for audiobooks, and in most cases have been able to delete in the normal way by connecting to the computer. But some files won't delete. Message appears saying "***** could not be deleted. The device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected"
I can carry on and delete other stuff, it's obviously still connected. I have emailed the philips help line, but am wondering if anyone can help. I'd be very grateful.

Try formatting it.

Obviously this will delete everything from it, so copy off anything you want to keep so you can put it back on afterwards.
