It's all relative - they pass within a few hundred feet of each other, which sounds quite a lot, and looks like no space at all. What you have to remember is, at those speeds, and that close, the margin for error is negligible, with no chance even to say sorry.

Sure looks like it when you see it! And they don't use computers, just trigonometry? I don't understand that either. Doesn't the ruler fall about in the cockpit?

Are you sure it's a few hundred feet? I was once standing on an elevated section when two red arrows flew near the beachfront, right at each other, then did that 'twist' in front of us. It looks like a lot less than 100 ft.
