Radio in tunnels

In England every time I go through a tunnel, the radio loses reception. Recently, I was in Austria and was about to get annoyed that Tina Turner's Typical Male would be cut off by the tunnel, but to my amazement it wasn't. So my question is this: Does anybody know why going through a short tunnel in England affects the radio, when going through a long tunnel under a mountain elsewhere has little or no affect?

Radio repeaters inside the tunnels.
or Tina Turner has a voice that even tunnels cant stop!
There are tunnels in the UK that have radio reception in them, but perhaps not the ones that you use.
yeah, but it's fun to see if you can sing to the right place when you come out of the tunnel!
It makes me snigger when I see people on the phone round here, rambling away, only to lose reception completely when they go through the many train tunnels round here.
lol, sara, I do that.
