I have an 8ft.wide up and over garage door which has devoloped a problem. When opening the door the left hand cable goes very slack when the door is about halfway open, therefore when i close it the wire tangles up on the feed cone(not sure if that is the correct term for the reel the wire goes round). I can only avoid getting the wire tangled by hand feeding the wire onto the reel untill the slack is taken up. Can anyone say why this has happened and can it be repaired without to much expense.?

Not sure how to fix it but a complete new roller/wire set fitted cost me about 80 quid a few months back.
I do not have foreknowledge of these people but try this link

Presumably the take up reel is getting stuck, have you tried lubricating it, perhaps the bearing is dry or worn. If there is a rewind spring it may have jammed itself.
Probably wrong link try this one http://ltgaragedoors2.tru-m.com/
Here in the U.S. your type of garage door is called an "overhead door". Most, but not all are powered by 2 springs to raise them. Perhaps one spring has broken. Even powered by one spring it's possible for one side of the spring to fail while not affecting the other side. The springs have a white line painted on them (if they're the coil type) which line will be a straight line when the door is down (spring relaxed), but will be a segmented line or at least a cruved line when the door is up. Take a look to see if that's the problem. It's also possible the spring has come loose or at least partially loose at its end. This is usually secured in place to the drive shaft by a large "Allen" screw. This can be reset, but that project can be dangerous unless you really know what you're doing...
We had the same problem. It was caused by the wooden top beam the mechanism was attached to twisting and jamming one side. It was only a simple frame like a goalpost and the joints only had a couple of screws that had come loose. We put in bigger screws and put in a couple of wedges between the beam and the concrete lintel to stop it twisting.

Thanks for your answers, will try all suggestions.
The usual mechanism usually uses a long conical transverse spring on a carrier frame. The spring is wound up under tension, which holds weight of door. You will need to replace the roller cone/cable set. This will be your problem. You may also need replacement roller pins on each side. Don't overlook these!
You need to lock the roller in position with a tough steel pin to prevent release of tension when replacing the rollers.
Cardale and Henderson are popular brands .. You'll find fitting instructions (which apply to other brands .. as they are similar) here .. http://www.cardalegar...how_product.php?id=30

I have been inspecting the door mechanism and think I have found the answer, but question is can i do the adjustment.I hope you can see photo on here http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=dcsj8i&s=5

Comparing the cone with the other side I can see that when the door is closed the good side still has one full turn of wire on the cone but the one in the picture is fully expanded. It is attached to the narrow rod which attaches to a larger rod upon which the main tension spring is fitted.
Question...If I loosen the grub screws which tighten the narrow rod to the larger one can I then turn it to take up the slack on the wire.
Hope this makes sense.
