Solid silver will bear an official date mark applied by the assay office where it was hallmarked. Silver plate will sometimes bear a manufacturers mark which signifies a date. Though this uses the manufacturers own individual dating system, it does allow dating of pieces.

Only Silver is hallmarked that is the way to tell Silver from Silverplate.
There are several types of Silverplate some a lot more valuable than others but none have a Hallmark as Silver does.
