I have some hard to access plug sockets so it is not easy to switch them on and off.
If I leave one switched on with a cable running through it to charge a device, is electricity being used when the socket is switched on but the device is not connected?

I'm 99% sure the answer has to be 'no, you daft sausage'.

if you have an extention lead only. NO current flows without a demand from a load.
But if it has a neon light and surge protection. then YES (very tiny ammount)
but it all adds up as globle warming experts would say.

Thanks, shooty. It is as I thought but I was having a doubting moment. I will continue to make use of the sockets with straightforward leads.

I would not be comfortable leaving a 'live' extension cord lying around. Is it not possible to get one of those 4-way plugs with circuit protection and place it in a more convenient place on a wall? They usually come with a short cord so that may be enough.

If the cable has a transformer in it (a little black box) to charge the device, then yes, electricity will be running even if the device is not connected.

You can tell this as the transformer will feel warm.

If however it is just a cable, then no.
