Right so what will i need for knitting?

But how do you choose a needle size?
And how much wool etc!?

It will tell you on the pattern... again try a proper woolshop they will be able to hgive you loads of help

I'm not a knitter Tinks but the first place to start would be with a pattern you like, that will tell you what size needles you will need and how much and what type of wool you will need. There are quite a few knitting magazines in the shops right now maybe one of them could give you some pointers, as I think they have patterns for all sorts of abilities.

Decide what you might like to knit. Start with something simple if you haven't knitted before (shop assistant in wool shop could advise) Choose a pattern (online or in a shop). The pattern will specify the type of wool & how much you need, size of needles , etc. Buy what you need (again online or in the shop) Start knitting!

As a general rule (if you haven't got a pattern to guide you), use 3 1/4 mm and 4mm needles for double knitting wool ( a good all-rounder to start with) - length of needles partly to suit you and also to take account of what you're knitting and how much room it will take on the needle. Personally, I prefer metal needles. As to how much wool, sorry, you really need to look at some patterns. They will also give you guidance about what else you will need like buttons etc.

I taught myself to knit and crochet. I haven't done either for about 4 years though. It actually ends up cheaper to buy a cardi/jumper than to knit one with the price of wool nowadays.

You don't need a pattern if you only want to knit one, purl one squares... or 'wonkies' which mine turned into when mum taught me a million years ago.. good luck chickadee... xx

I will have to get a photo of the cardi i have to see if anyone can identify the pattern or "stitch" was used if that makes sense ... I like it!!

Probs true daffy but id like to learn, and i hate having the same jumpers as everyone or same clothes hehe xx (be a loooong whole befre i make anything wearable i bet!!!) xx

Loads of knitting tutorials on youtube Tinker. Just get the feel for knitting before tackling anything big. Get a ball of double knit as suggested, and a short (kids) pair of 4mm needles, anout 19cm long, MUCH easier for a beginner to use.
Also, look in your library for books. Dont buy anything expensive to start with, the needles and a ball of wool you can probably get for around £4.

You don't need a pattern for a scarf, just some needles and wool. A dictionary of swear words is indispensible.

There are lots of things on the web to teach you how to knit .
My grandmother taught me when I was about five years old .I used to knit clothes for dolls and teddies .
I do small stuff now though as have arthritic hands .Socks and squares .
Start with something simple .A scarf etc .Try knitted squares which you can make into a blanket .You can practice various stitch patterns on the squares too . All good practice for your cardi .
Knitting squares is also useful for charity .

I feel so ancient.
I was taught to knit in school.
First we did a scarf on two pins.
Then we did mitts on two pins and sewed them up the sides.
Then we did mitts on four pins and grafted the top.
Then we did socks on four pins, turning the heel and everything.
And all before the age of 10.
Absolutely hated it in school, but have enjoyed it ever since.
Wool shop assistants will be more than happy to advise you . Will probably show you how to do it. (It's all about tension which is all about practice really). They may also know of local knitting groups or classes which will get you going.
