If someone said they wanted a divorce (nothing to do with me thankfully) is there anywhere you can go to get some free advice on how to proceed, especially if you're going to have to sort out what to do with a joint mortgage etc.

The local Citizen's Advice Bureau is always a good place to start.

 

Why does everybody recommend the CAB? they are the most unhelpful people around, all the information they know is what they read out of a book that is about 100 years old.

Because although it sounds like you have had a bad experience the CAB train all of their advisers who usually have relevant professional experience and they have access to all the latest publications / leaflets etc that can be given to people making enquiries. Plus they are free and independent. To my mind this makes them a valuable and useful organisation. The last poster clearly disagrees...
