I find the easiest way is to drink plenty of water, the swallowing action works. Additionally, I try to induce a big yawn, which always seems to clear my ears quickly and without discomfort. I don't know how old you are, but things seems to improve as you get older.
An easy and safe way to release the pressure in your ears is to block your nose with your hand and slow exhale through your nose until you hear a popping sound. Once you hear this sound your ears are equalised to the pressure of the plane. You may find you need to do this several times over the course of your flight.
