A vision mixer is basically a live 'Editor' . Using a Switcher/Vision Mixing desk to cut between cameras, Graphic and VT playouts in a television gallery.

Hopefully the following site should explain all....(although the vision mixer depicted is very simple);

Quite often nowadays a director will do his own switching as well. Sometimes if you see a show or film with a scene in a control room you'll hear "Standby two, take two, standby one, take one, move in three, take three, standby two take two". The director is warning both the cameraman and the vision mixer (we call them vision switchers here) which camera shot is next. On the word "take two" the switcher presses the button that means camera two's pictures are now being recorded or broadcast live.
