But you must turn the video to standby or off after programming the time. On other videos u have to press this button which would show a clock icon on the display after programming, this button would also sort of turn the video off.

Just to clear up a mis-conception (which you and 99% of Joe Public believe) Vcr's don't record from the TV.......they record from the aerial.........the TV is only needed to see the on-screen menus and display the picture. You can actually disconnect the TV from the video and it will still record.......so if your TV has broken down just remember you can still record the programme.
