Fo the pas t two bays, the MS icon in the bottom tray has been turning orange within a few minutes of switching on.

We have done a full scan, numerous quick scans and have run malwarebytes. However, it is still orange. What can we do to get it back to green and make it safe.

We use Google Chrome and Windows XP

Try reinstalling the program.
If you hover the mouse pointer over the icon, or open it up what does it say you need to do?

Chuck, it says.
At the top in an orange bar:- Pc status potentially unprotected

Scan completed on 31638 items
no threats were detected
real time protection on
virus and spywear up to date

In orange box Scan now

Did a quick scan at 9.00 am
Continues to be orange.
I'd agree with daffy then, just uninstall it and reinstall it again.

Sorry to be thick. Do you mean uninstall MSE and install it again?

Is it easy to do?
Yes... and yes.

download it from here.
http://windows.micros...s/security-essentials

Goto add remove programs in the control panel, find MSE click on it and select uninstal once it's removed and you've restarted the computer then just double click the file you downloaded in step one and follow the instructions.
I have had this problem for a couple of months now, I have Windows 7 and Google. I kept running my Scan just to check and it always came back clear. I am afraid I am one of those users who knows zilch of what goes on behind the keyboard! My Icon also disappears after about 15 minutes. This week there has been a consistent message appearing every few minutes saying ,threats detected , being cleared, do nothing. Glad to say to-day nothing has appeared so hope its gone. Please advise if I should get some -one to look at my laptop. Thank you
You dont need to remove and reinstall .

The orange icon means simply that you need to update the definitions .
There will be an option to run an update .

Thank you Chuck and daffy. I will have a go at that.

Haven't you seen my post ?
Question Author
Sorry Bazile. No I didn't see you there. I do apologise.
Question Author
...............where is the update option?
I would agree with you Bazile, if it wasn't for the fact that my mother has an identical situation on her notebook. She updates and scans but the problem comes back after a couple of days, it's like the automatic updates aren't doing their thing.
I'll give the deinstall/reinstall a bash too.
I'd agree too, if it wasn't for the first reply from tilly that said "virus and spywear up to date"

Hi,

I agree with deggers. MSE is good but there are other free alternatives and Comodo's is best according to this indepenent site:
http://www.matousec.c...llenge-64/results.php
The level of detail this guy goes to is far deeper than any I've ever seen, in professional magazines. Notice Mcafee is utter rubbish as is most other commercial software. Outpost is free and briliant, but Comodo is even better :).
Certainly do NOT reinstall Windows or go to a professional just on the grounds MSE is orange. It only means the update has failed not that your machine is infected.

Mike
That page ^ is showing results of firewall tests, not anti-virus software.
