If an electric shower is left on all the time does it use much electricity or is it like a TV on stand by.

It uses no electricity unless water is flowing, when it heats it. Leaving the isolator switch "on" uses an infinitessimally tiny bit to make the neon glow - a negligible amount, assuming the switch has a neon indicator of course.
If every TV left on stand by over night was actually switched off enough power would be saved to light an entire town!
Which goes to show that a TV "standby" is really nothing of the sort. but as to your original question, I couldn't have put it better than LCDMAN.
