What I want to know is do I use the power I produce and feed excess into the grid or do I use all the power from the grid I need and feed all the power I produce into the grid?

The government would have to be so keen on consumer generation that they forced the companies to buy at a higher price than they sell for, for the latter option to be worthwhile. (Wouldn't consider that beyond any government though.) Without knowing, I'd say it was almost certain you just sell what you generate but don't use.

In the UK, the excess gets fed into the grid. Can't see any reason why it would be advantageous for the latter to happen.

Well the government and the electricity supplier each pay an amount per kilowatt to me .
In the UK the installers have an obligation to explain all matters to the client. Is this not the case in Aus?

Be fair, it's only a small issue one might be curious about but not thought important at the time.
