Buying From Usa

I want to buy a book from the USA that i cannot get here in the uk. When i use my credit or debit card to pay does it automaticaly pay in dollars but will show has pounds on my statment, thanks for your help

It showed up as pounds when I bought some books from the US a few years back. You should maybe check with your bank/credit card company if you have any worries. The pound/dollar exchange rate isn't too good at the moment so your book might cost a bit more or there might be some other charges.

nungate, never again! The only item I got from the states had 17 different rubber stamps on the package and I had to pick it up from the P.O to pay a release fee.

on the couple of occasions that i have bought DVDs from American sites the amount showed as GBP using the exchange rate at the time of the transaction

Goodness Noth! Never had any trouble at all. I phoned the company that supplied the book I was after, and it arrived about a week later no problems!
And my daughter ordered some stitching materials and charts from a company in Australia and the stuff arrived within a week! Again no problems with customs or charges

I recently bought a book from the USA and paid by PayPal. PayPal converted the dollars to pounds and it went through without my having to do anything.

Was delivered quite quickly too. I was impressed.

Mrs C, that's my experience too, I always use PayPal - means the person I am buying from doesn't have my personal bank or credit card details.

Thank you all for you help, theres not a lot of money involved the book is 27 dollars and it seems that the postage is 7 dollars, as it is only avery thin light music book, thanks all

For what it's worth, I buy a lot from the U.K. on Ebay (as well as sell) and the price is listed in Dollars, but in parenthesis it shows what the British Pound equivalent is. When I pay for it using Pay Pal, it deducts in Dollars...

You will be charged in sterling at the rate that your credit/debit card uses.

When buying anything from the USA you need to make sure that you are aware of the mode of postage/freight before you pay. Some are very fair and some are complete rip-offs. Many sites often advertise 'Free Shipping' but when it comes to paying you're charged some exorbitant fee for freight, the 'USA only' sign can be viewed somewhere obscure.

I've had it a couple of times that the Paypal payment went through, and after that I get a statement to pay additional freight. Even if the freight is reasonable, I always cancel those transactions as business needs to learn that the internet is for the whole world, not just USA.

At the same time, there are good US businesses who are fair and efficient so look around. If not sure look online for reviews.
