My wife wants to buy an i pad,is an i pad just a smaller version of a lap top?
I have a Dell lap top connected to a wireless modem supplied by Talk Talk.
Will she have to have her own modem for her I pad ?

We all use the same wireless modem for computers, laptops, iPads etc. An iPad is a bit like a computer but I don't have any proper laptop-like apps on it (no word processor, etc - don't know if they are available). I use mine for wasting time really (playing games, searching the net, email). If I was going to do some 'work' I would use my laptop.

I have one, not worked it out properly yet, but looks like its going to be the same as a laptop as long as you don't want to write a book on it, just use it for browsing the net, playing games etc. my one, because i am on BT internet, can be used to connect to the net anywhere, almost, by using BT's FON, or else just go to macdonalds, ASDA etc when you are out and you can go online. advantage is that its so small and light.

Sorry, didn't answer the question, your tablet will pick up the internet from your hub, or anyone elses with permission. so you do not need another hub or contract.

I have just set up Skype on my IPad 2 . All very straightforward and user friendly. I use it to call my son in Melbourne, and Skype to Skype is free.

For I Pad you need to connect to the Internet by WiFi. I presume all tablet computers are the same. A lot of public buildings now offer free access to wifi. I believe in London WiFi stations Re being set up in some streets.


I find it very useful and so handy to carry round the house and keep by me ready to answer e mails and refer to on line resources.


The Apple retail stores are excellent, .....very knowledgable staff who do all the setting up for you, and offer free tutorial classes.

The Ipad now also comes in a cellular version (dearer) which uses data just like you cell phone. You can use this anywhere where your mobile would work.

Note that iPads are not the only tablets available.

Samsung for example make excellent tablets that are cheaper than iPads.

I have had a Kobo Vox now for 18 months and I am very pleased with it. The Vox has now been replaced by the Kobo Arc, which is 16GB as opposed to the Vox being 8GB, but about the same price

You sould be able to use the same modem and just log on any machine to the modem. I run two laptops and iPad and iTouch of my Sky supplied Modem

I just bought a Google Nexus. I researched beforehand, and in many reviews it rated second only to the iPad.....and a lot cheaper. I love mine.

I love my Nexus 7 too, Pasta. In many ways better than iPad and so much cheaper

I have been given a 32gb kobo arc today and it's fabulous! I've just done a video call from it to my laptop, bit confused but it worked!
The biggest problem is that garth won;t allow itunes to have his music (for totally understandable artistic reasons and that;s not a debatable issue guys) but i have all his 12 albums on my laptop and don;t know how to put them onto the arc, but give me time and i'll suss it out.

my OH pays £10 a month for an invisible dongle for his ipad and he gets internet anywhere, not sure how, but he does lol

I bought six Google Nexus7 for myself, nieces and nephews. So far no problems. We all love this little machine.

Most people that have iPads tend to have computers too as I Pads are v limited on anything other than browsing the web and picking up e mails, which lets face it ism ore or less what we all use PC's for, plus you are hog tied to Apple. There are a host of Tablet's coming out from all manufacturers, personally I have a small net book (Samsung) which I take abroad and offshore with me and I would be lost without it as it does everything where as an I pad doesn't and actually costs more.
