Hanging Doors?!
15 Answers
My bathroom door has a tiny gap between the door and the floor. This has never been a problem. However we have just bought some hooks to hang towels which hang over the door- now the door will not shut. Is there a simple way to lower the door to get the best of both worlds?

If the hooks are the flat metal type could you neatly cut a recess/ recesses in the top of the door to save hassle... would that be possible?

Sorry, lowering the door slightly is not an easy thing to do and really needs a very handyman or tradesman. The hinge recesses have to be extended and have the old space filled. It would be a relatively easy solution to get a nice piece of square wood the same thickness as the door and screw that to the top of the door, placing spacers (washers) between the door and wood to the thickness of the hooks. A nice coat of paint, and to improve the looks even further and protect the door, see if you can get a nice thin piece of stainless steel sheeting between the door and the wood.
Those over door hooks often stop the door closing.
I'm unsure about simple ways. Lowering the door a fraction means moving the hinges on the door, or on the frame, down a small amount, which means filling the existing holes. Bit of a faf. Or you could plane a bit off the top of the door, either all the way across or sand/file indents where you want the hooks. But the best option is probably to sling the hooks. They're gimmicks anyway. You can always screw a normal hook on the door if desperate for one.
