Because all it really does is to block any incoming numbers that are "number not known", as are most of these "cold callers" coming from call centres.Ring BT on 150 and ask them, they will give you all the details.

You mean withheld numbers?

It doesnt actually block anything.  You just get caller display for nothing.  You can register seperately for the Telephone Preference Service which tells the marketing companies not to call you.

The TPS actually works, we have been registered since November and we have only had one sales call. Once you threaten them with the TPS they apologise and hang up.

Reading between the lines the BT Privacy thing is just a way of keeping some business as it stipulates that the service is only free if you make calls through BT, and not some cheaper re-seller (Talk-Talk for example)

Don't pay for this TPS is free

go here http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/

and register your numbers - If after a month you get cold calls from companies they can be fined.

I got one or two who were slow to update their databases - I asked them if they knew what the telephone preference service was and they couldn't get off the line fast enough.

This is a BT scam to try to get you to pay for something that is free by bundling caller identification in .

I guess Jeremy Clarkson had to pay for that Ford GT40 somehow!

jake-the-peg. The service is free. They are not asking for any money at all. They just stipulate that you need to be a BT customer, and I guess they hope that some people will buy a new handset so they can use the caller ID service

I'll bet JC isn't doing the advert for free though :c)

By 'being a BT customer' you actually have to use BT for your phone calls and not be sub-contracted out to one of the other call providers, such as Talk Talk
As i work for BT, i thought i'd give you the lowdown.. BT is offering FREE caller display.. for 3 months only.  The privacy part is a registration FREE with the TPS.. Telephone Preference Service who contact companies and ask them to remove your details from their calling lists/databases.  This does actually work.  However be careful with this package as BT now ask if they can be an exclusion from the TPS.. so you'll still actually recieve calls from BT.

BT ask to be an exclusion!!!

Cheeky Bu**ers!
