You can set up the direct debits by phone for the tv licence, so wait until you have the account details and then phone them ask them to backdate it to the day you moved in.

I doubt you would be unlucky enough to be caught by a detector van immediately on moving in, but if you are just explain the situation. I'm sure they'd understand.

I was in a similar position and then I forgot about the licence. Eventually I remembered nearly 2 months later and nearly had a fit! I rang them up and did it instantly. I think DD procedures have changed now though, I've just tried to set one up and you have to fill in a form and actually sign now (they can't accept what used to be a phone signature) so if you call them, by the time the form arrives you should be able to give your bank details.
No, one of those big vans with a huge radar on top will come to your house. You will be forceably dragged from your property, thrown in the back of the van and you will never be heard of again. Plus they'll take your telly for their canteen.

When  I moved house, I didn't buy  a telly license straight away and, sod's law,  the license man turned up (I think when the previous occupier transfers their license they automatically check).  I explained the situation and he was nice as pie.  He had the direct debit paperwork there and I just filled it in and off he toddled.

Incidentally, when i was a student in a shared house we had no license and were visited 3 times before they basically made us go to the post office there and then and buy  a license!  So despite the big talk, they will do everything they can before resorting to court action or big fines.

Christ!! Reading this has just reminded me I haven't bought a licence either yet and I moved into my property 4 months ago!!!!  On the phone now to them!!! Eek!
