I wouldn't - certainly not the planner. I don't think I'd tip the kitchen fitter either, he's only doing his job - you can ply him with tea and sandwiches while he's doing the work. These days I don't tip anyone just for doing their job, only if they have done something especially helpful. I wouldn't dream of tipping the bloke who does work in the house for me - I make him tea, then pay his invoice.
cloverjo - he is a handyman as such and works for himself - no company etc - just a bunch of lads working together including my nephew who will be doing the plumbing - mind you won't be much as it is all there from the old kitchen.
Why tip anyone, for the same reason. Unfortunately it is a social pressure to do so for some occupations, which allow the employers to keep the job low paid.
conne, if you really feel you need to tip the self-employed fitter, only do if it he's done a good job, you've checked all the drawers work, etc. - if then you are happy, give him a tenner for a drink - nothing more. It also depends how much he's charging you - if his quote for the work is a lot, I wouldn't add anything extra. It's a moral pressure you're feeling, you don't have to do it. It's his job.
Unfortunately I do for instance my painter - he will give me a price - some years back - I usually upped it by about £50.
same as my boiler service man - up him about a £10 more. Anyway kitchen fitter is doing over and above as converting a wall dresser into part of the kitchen so I will wait and see - the oul gut feeling.
