I always forget....and really never fully understood...
What are hiccups and why/how do we get them?? Please explain!

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I think it's caused by an irritation of the diaphragm, a muscle at the lower part of your tummy. Normally it makes you breathe smoothly, but if the diaphragm gets irritated, the mechanism gets disrupted, leading to hiccups.
You can try out this experiment to demonstrate the effect. First, take a deep breath. Now hold it in. Now

Get together with someone else, preferably someone you know well, and get them to arm wrestle with you.
The method is as follows, instead of trying to win the arm wrestle, the aim is to push equally against each other as hard as the weaker person can manage.
The way that you breathe and tense your abdominal muscles during arm wrestling stops the diaphragm from spasming and as a consequence, stops the hiccups.
For all you doubters out there try it first (next time you get hiccups).
