We have posted via the red postboxes provided by Royal Mail, and now this has gone missing, contacted Customer Care, no profs of posting, simply didn't want to know after that...but surely if they provide postboxes instead of queuing for service then they should honour everything that goes into a postbox..?

Given that you cannot prove that you posted the item how can you expect the Royal Mail to compensate you.

It is for this very reason that there are services that offer traceability.
How can the Royal Mail be responsible for something you say you did?
They have no way of knowing you actually mailed it.
The postbox can't testify.

I appreciate the comments of trust and prof etc..
But if you post something and it goes missing, do I just say ' oh well..'
Or contact the delivery office...it just annoys me...:-(
I'd say 'oh well', simply because I can neither prove I posted nor that it wasn't received.

If it is important I use a tracked service.
if it is important then go to the post office and get a 'proof of posting' then you can claim even for standard post. Otherwise you just take a chance, the Royal Mail information clearly says ' No compensation without proof of posting' anything other would be impossible as anyone could claim to have posted an item that was lost.
Post boxes are perfect for post - letters that have no intrinsic value and can be resent if not delivered.

Anything of value, or important, should be posted at the post office.
The fact is, it shouldn`t go missing and you shouldn`t have to pay for a tracked service just in case it does. Royal Mail provide post boxes and you pay to use them via postage. When the item doesn`t arrive they say it`s just tough. That`s not really good enough. I would phone up and complain too because there have been cases of postmen dumping their mail beside the road. At least if you complain, they can see if there is a pattern emerging. I hardly ever post packages but they have just lost an item I sold on ebay. It was first class signed for and I can`t even begin a claim until 15 days is up and then they will "consider" it. That`s nice of them!
The irony of this thread is that NGHFB71 works for Royal Mail so should be well versed in their methods......
Really? Maybe they can help me find my package..
