Years ago I came across a book on arithmetic which contained better and faster ways that long multiplication, long division etc could be done, without pen and paper. Any ideas?

The Trachtenberg method of speed maths would fit your bill. Developed in a prisoner of war camp, I believe it is in use in Switzerland. I think the book I bought was from Pelican many years back. www.Amazon.co.uk will allow you to order the book
