Having had the same problem, I found, firstly, make sure the batteries are fresh.  They really don't last all that long.  Secondly, there may be new drivers available for the mouse.  You can go on line to microsoft here:

Good luck!

i used to use one of these also but it kept jumping to top corner of screen and was driving me mad !

meant i kept clicking on ad banners i didnt want and as i play a lot of games it was a nightmare ! i went back to a good ole wired mouse after that !

hate wireless!!!! optical is brilliant, but i stick to wired ones and cos u can get them for 5 or less now with optical i stick with them!!
Only slightly related, but the Logitech mx1000 doesn't stick, slow down, or anything. I'm using it now, and have been for several weeks, and it's brilliant. You wouldn't know it was cordless.

btw, you can get it far cheaper at places like www.scan.co.uk than on the high street.
Optical mouses (mice?) will not work on certain surfaces, try using a mousemat or a sheet of plain paper to move the mouse over, this might help
My mouse is optical too and is brilliant.  Its a 'Trust 270KD Silverline' and came with the keyboard.  Got the pair for a tenner in a computer fair.  It's not to bad on batteries either.
