Years ago my Mum used to clean her rings in a drop of gin and then use a soft baby toothbrush to dislodge the dirt. Then buff them up with a chamois leather.
However I wouldn't recommend it if it is an expensive ring. You would be better to take it to a reputable jeweller and get it cleaned professionaly.

line a small bowl with tin foil, shiny side up.pour in warm water, enough to cover ring and a bit more.desolve into the water 2 teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda.leave it in for 15 minutes or so,then dry and buff it.apparently the tin foil attracts the dirt, whilst the bi-carb lifts it.it works, give it a try,it is ok on other metals too like brass, silver etc....

My gf uses toothpaste and a toothbrush.
Just a bit of advice: be very careful when you clean using any of these methods, white gold is naturally quite yellow, and is rhodium plated to give it a bright white finish, if you are not careful you could damage the plating and your ring will become dull, my best advice would be to only use a soft jewellery cloth or a professional reputable jeweller.
I always use a hard pink cream called Carnate.  It's a jewellery polish that also works a treat on your nails.  You cover the surface to be polished with Carnate, then buff it off with another cloth.  Works a treat and wont take any plating off.
My wedding ring is white gold (as is my wife's - they and her engagement ring were made for us by a goldsmith friend) and is not, and never has been, rhodium plated. Rhodium just looks cheap and nasty, and I can't imagine why anyone would want to plate on to gold anyway.  Our rings are electronically cleaned every few years, but day-to-day a buff with a soft cloth and occasional use of metal polish or jeweller's rouge keeps them bright.
