Does anyone know how the new PVR's manage to know when the adverts are being transmitted so as to avoid recording them

In older TV's you can actually see this signal in the top right corner of the screen, Its a moving zebra crossing type thing about 5mm tall and 3cm long. Most modern TVs ignore this signal by cutting off the top and bottom parts. The bottom part is normally Teletext info.
