it seems like im being charged a fortune, i put it on emergency at 9am this morning unexpectedly and it gave me £5.00 i then got ready went out and came back at about 3pm today.I read the metre just now and its £4.66, ive got three lights on and the laptop im using needs to be plugged in as the battery is knackered.i had used nothing between going out and coming back, whats going on?

Quite so, gingebee - my supplier charges about 14 pence per kwh - on a credit meter.

alan.....the debt will have been purchased from the previous energy provider and covered by charging you a higher unit rate.What are you paying per KWh

Have you monitored your usage over 24hrs and compared it to the cost?.....how much was the debt.

Economy Energy charges around 16p per kWh on a pre-payment meter. (It's 15.78p around here but prices vary slightly across the country).

With such a charge, a modern efficient fridge-freezer costs around 20p per day to run but an older model might cost twice that. So (assuming that you've got an older, inefficient fridge-freezer) perhaps 15p of electricity might have been used in simply keeping your food cool between 0900 (when you had £5 credit) and nearly 1800 (when you checked your meter).

Have you got anything else plugged in? A TV on standby (rather than unplugged) might have used 1p in electricity during that time. Other devices (such as printers) continue to use small amounts of electricity when they appear to be switched off. (If you don't believe me, just place a portable radio next to an 'off' printer and listen to the interference!).

What type of light bulbs are you using? If they're the older tungsten type then 3 x 100W for nearly 3 hours would use about 14p in electricity.

Entering my own postcode here (and, of course, selecting 'Prepayment Meter') shows 15.78p per kWh and ZERO daily standing charge:

Sounds cheap,just 34 p from 9 am to 5.30 pm.
Remember the meter does not go down 1 p at a time it drops 20 p or more in one 'hit'.
I normally use £3 per 24 hrs.
You say the standing charge is 18p a day so that is only 16 p for electricity.

Good grief, Eddie. You pay well over a grand a year just for leccy? I pay considerably less than that for gas and leccy combined.

Doesn't sound high to me, alan, if you have a fridge/ freezer and things on standby- a microwave or oven digital clock for example uses electricity
