speakers for computer.

I have speakers that came with my PC, but the speakers will not emit sound.  Do I have to configure them somehow?

first, check that the speakers are properly connected to the computer (there are usually several seemingly correct jacks at the back of the pc... make sure you're putting them in the corret one). also make sure they're plugged into mains if they need to be.

second, make sure that the volume controls on both speakers if they have them and PC are turned up. for the PC goto start->control panel->sounds->volume control.. make sure all controls are not mute or at 0.

This is a bit of a novel way of checking but it saves you clicking and double clicking on lots of things.

Click Start > Run
In the wee text field, type
sndvol32.exe
and click OK.

It may take a few seconds to appear but in the volume control panel that appears, make sure nothing is muted or that the volume bar is too low on any of the settings.

I just tend to find that volume control a little tricky to find sometimes and I use computers all the time!

Unless something's really broken, it's likely to be things needing wired up properly or this volume control.

Everything which has been written so far is excellent advice but I'm still drawn to the idea that it's simply a case of having the speakers plugged into the wrong socket. This is because it reads as if there has never been any sound from the speakers - the default settings on most operating systems normally have the volume set to a reasonably level and muting is not enabled.

An elderly lady I know bought a refurbished office computer and I helped her set it up. Everything worked fine except that there was no sound from the speakers. I phoned the suppliers for advice and they knew what the problem was straight away : I'd fallen into the trap of plugging the speakers into a socket labelled 'Speakers' ! It turned out that this was the speaker socket from the modem and not the (unlabelled) one from the on-board sound card.

So, look for another socket which might be the right one. I can't think of any circuitry which would be damaged by having speakers incorrectly plugged in, so just use a bit of 'trial & error'

As the other people have mentioned it could be a problem with the physical connection, but it could also be a problem with the PC itself.  Have you tested any other speakers in the PC ? 

If you have tested other speakers and they dont work either then the first step is to see if the drivers are installed, right click on my computer (usually on the desktop) click properties, click the hardware tab, then device manager, under the sound, video and games controllers do you have anything ? if so do they have yellow exclemation marks next to them ? 

If you cannot find any audio controllers, they may be under the "other devices" section in the device manager, this is a yellow question mark and it may say "audio controller" and have a yellow exclemation mark next to it. 

If either of these is the case, your drivers are missing or corrupt and you will need to reinstall your soundcard.

Another idea is to go into start menu, control panel and "sounds and audio devices" then check to see that all volumes are up, no mute buttons are ticked and that wave sound is turned up to at least half.
