Toilet Seat Not Staying Up

Hi All,

I bought a new toilet seat, a wooden one, the top cover will stay up, but the seat itself will not. i have adjusted the hinges and no joy. the previous seat did not have a problem. i went on google, but apart from two suction stickers and a piece of wire, there seemed to be no other advice.
Is this a fault with the seat/fixings, can I move the hinges?

Just ask everyone using it to sit down to pee - much more comfortable!
Men sitting down to pee is quite a big thing in Germany, and is called 'Sitzpinkeln'

It sounds like your new seat is a bit thicker than the old one and isn't going back beyond the vertical. If you have adjusted the hinges as far as you can I don't think there is much you can do other than remove the top cover, which may allow it go back far enough. When adjusting you need to bring the seat forward as far as you can.

Hi Annie - I had the same problem so I undid the top cover and now seat goes up and down. I do NOT like top cover down on any toilet - it makes me very sick.

I got a replacement seat a few years back, to match the bathroom colour scheme. It would not stay up no matter how I fiddled with the seat fittings. It's now in it's box permanent​ly stuck in the corner of the room and I'm still using the previous one. I did write to the retailer to complain but got no reply. I figured that the bowl/cistern must be sited incorrectly. Very disappointing.

It's really not a good idea to flush without the lid down...the whole area will be sprayed with an aerosol (ie fine mist) of toilet contents. The lid is for a good reason...not just to sit down and rest!

No wonder you don't like the lid down if you keep being sick. It must be a real bind to have to lift the lid before you throw up every time, jenny :-)

I had exactly the same issue and it was exactly as Garaman says - the new seat and lid's combined depth was greater than the one I replaced.

I would suggest from a hygiene point of view you do have a toilet seat lid and that it is put down when you flush.
They did tests in a standard family bathroom and the toothbrushes carried more faecal bateria than the inside of the toilet!!
This was because when you flush the faecal bateria flies everywhere!!

Mythbusters checked that toilet seat / bacteria/ matter issue and concluded it mattered little. You are brushing your teeth with a contaminated brush even if you keep it as far away as the kitchen. A lid isn't that effective it seems.

I really don't care what a lightweight TV entertainment show concluded...flushing the toilet "open" is bad practice and should be avoided.

I have 'trained' Mr T to sit down, when he urinates. Our toilet seats are never up and the lids are always down....except when we are using the toilet.
