Toilet Seat Not Staying Up
34 Answers
Hi All,
I bought a new toilet seat, a wooden one, the top cover will stay up, but the seat itself will not. i have adjusted the hinges and no joy. the previous seat did not have a problem. i went on google, but apart from two suction stickers and a piece of wire, there seemed to be no other advice.
Is this a fault with the seat/fixings, can I move the hinges?
thank you.

It sounds like your new seat is a bit thicker than the old one and isn't going back beyond the vertical. If you have adjusted the hinges as far as you can I don't think there is much you can do other than remove the top cover, which may allow it go back far enough. When adjusting you need to bring the seat forward as far as you can.

I got a replacement seat a few years back, to match the bathroom colour scheme. It would not stay up no matter how I fiddled with the seat fittings. It's now in it's box permanently stuck in the corner of the room and I'm still using the previous one. I did write to the retailer to complain but got no reply. I figured that the bowl/cistern must be sited incorrectly. Very disappointing.
I would suggest from a hygiene point of view you do have a toilet seat lid and that it is put down when you flush.
They did tests in a standard family bathroom and the toothbrushes carried more faecal bateria than the inside of the toilet!!
This was because when you flush the faecal bateria flies everywhere!!
