With all the current bad publicity about plastic I have been more aware about this problem in my own area. I only have to drive to my local supermarket and I notice plastic sheets wrapped around trees and bushes, plastic bottles in grass verges, carrier bags in shreds caught on fences, the list goes on. Would it be a good idea to get offenders who are doing community service to be put to work collecting this rubbish.

If I see any litter on my daily walks - I pick it up and bin it. I do think that litter-picking would be a very suitable punishment for young offenders who have transgressed only mildly. When I was at school it was normal to send classes out for their turn at cleaning the school site and areas abutting. This was from infants through to grammar.

They used to do that in California. We used to see them by the roadside in their high viz jackets. I don't know if that still happens. I`m sure that someone would be complaining about their human rights if that was introduced in the UK
They do do it the UK, or used to. My friend was on community service and had to go litter picking and do graffiti removal.
Litter picking is a paid job & we cant deny them work.

Think I will contact the local council and suggest it.
Maybe so, Tambo, but they can't round every inch of the country.
I just told you, they already do it!

Well tamborine if it's a paid job then where are they.
You may get a choice in some counties.

landscaping and forestry
building and maintenance

There are quite a lot of local litter picking groups around. We have one on the first saturday of the month but I don't get to many because I am working. I do think about the ethics re putting the street cleaning guy out of work though. The Marine Conservation Society and Surfers Against Sewage organise a lot of beach cleans which are good to get involved with. Every little helps
It's also not a bad idea to take turns in your community to go out for a couple of hours and do it yourself - I have but to be fair that's in a village type group, it's probably harder in larger towns and cities.

I am going to put my money where my mouth is, I am going to look into local litter picking groups and join up.
Round here they have an exercise group who also pick up litter.
Our litter picking group is acknowledged by the local council because you have to have somewhere where you can deposit the collection. We put our deposits beside the local recycling bank and they know to collect it. If we didn't involve the council, our deposits would be treated as fly tipping

When I was a kid I was taught to put any litter in my pocket and take it home to throw it away, now I see cans and take away packaging just chucked out of car windows.
When I was at school if a student misbehaved they had to spend their breaks litter picking.
I saw a piece on you tube where somebody had gone to Japan for a holiday and was taking pictures of the high speed trains when he spotted a man picking up litter. About an hour later he saw him again, streets away, still picking up litter. It seems he was doing it just because he was proud of his country.

Thanks for all your input ppl. Just going off now, my litter picking days are starting tomorrow.
