I took my compass back to the shop and the assistant agreed that it wasn't right, I paid an extra �3 for a better one and that works perfectly.

Nice to hear someone telling us the outcome of a question. I was quite intrigued with the thread (X-files sprung to mind) (couldn't offer any suggestions though - everyone seemed to have covered most things)
