My Leibherr 3142, fridge-freezer has died. The fridge light is on but no action from compressor.
There have been no rumblings or sign that there was any problem. There was a lot of ice in the freezer.
The machine is less than five years old and is kept in the kitchen.
Any help would be appreciated

Most likely cause is faulty thermostat. Easy DIY repair - check out ebay for replacement stats - buy new from about 10.
HI bmf, If you feel confident about DIY repairs and before buying parts etc... First unplug the power to the complete freezer, then find and open the thermostat connections, it should usually have only two wires to it, one is the live wire FROM the supply and the other is the wire TO the motor, it acts just like any other switch so if you connect the two wires together and then put the power back on the motor should run, if it doesn't there are other things it might be but these require more than simple faultfinding and you would be advised to contact someone qualified for this work.

Having absolutely no knowledge of European or British makes of fridges, but on the assumption that basics are the same as here in the U.S., a key sentence in your post refers to a "lot of ice in the freezer". If this is an automatic defrost model, and most these days are, then you probably have a failed defrost function. This is a realtively simple device and depends on one or more defrost "lamps". These, usually, are small, perhaps 1 inch diamter and 5 to 6 inch in length heating elements that look a lot like small slim light bulbs. They are most likely located behind an interior panel on the freezer side. Once the freezer is defrosted (expect a lot of water) the panel should be easily accessed. If you feel up to the job, the lamps are easily replaced. Often, if these fail and that side ices over the compressor motor runs incessantly and can pop an overheat circuit breaker to protect it from burn out. At any rate, if you get it to going again, find out why you have all the ice.

Good Luck!

As has been said previously it could be the thermostat. But If your unit is like my Bosch 'Electronic' fridge, temp controll is not via a standard type thermostat but by a transducer coupled to a controller PCB. The power transitor on the controller PCB went short which then caused the motor to be on continuously. This caused the fridge to be too cold and freeze everything untill the motor then burnt out. This was very disspointing on a unit which was only 18 month old and made by a renowned manufacturer
