Unfortunately even with work experience you will still need to fulfil certain admission requirements (unless applying to a degree mill or dodgy institution - the University of Northumbria at Newcastle is NOT one of these though). Typically you need GCSE (or equiv.)English (and perhaps Maths), as well as some appropriate university entry qualifications. Of course, boobesque and EDDIE51 are correct, essentially it is up to the institution in question, but typically the minimum entry requirement in the UK is two Es at A-level. I suspect that it probably would be the case that you'd be asked to do a foundation/access course first, and that your previous experience is taken into consideration for that. The only thing you can do is contact the admissions office as well as the other appropriate departments within the university to see what they say/suggest. Because it's an undergraduate course I think you'll have to apply through UCAS though.
I've just been reading the information in the right-hand panel, here:
http://online.unn.ac.uk/prospectus/coursedetail.asp?Cour seID=76
The 'normal' compusory requirements are five GCSEs at grade C or above including English Language and Mathematics PLUS either appropriate A-levels or completion of a suitable HEFC Access Course.
There is a partial exemption for mature students, however, quoted here:
"Mature Student entry
Access course students without GCSEs are not required to take these qualifications in addition to their Access award, but must ensure that any required subjects are fully met within their Access course."
It seems clear from this that, while you are not required to obtain any passes at GCSE or A-level, you must first study for an HEFC Access award and that the components of that award must include English and Mathematics to the equivalent of GCSE level.
