Very Loud Air Horn On Car For Safety?

Our friends were carjacked recently - a very nasty attack and my wife is becoming increasingly anxious about driving on her own at night.
Would it be legal to install an air horn (the sort that plays Colonel Bogey at a very high volume) to be used only in this sort of emergency? My thinking is that it would attract more attention than the standard car horn and might frighten any attackers off.

According to the Motor Vehicle Construction and Use regs 1986 (Clause 37 if you want to look it up), "no motor vehicle shall be fitted with a bell, gong, siren or 2 tone horn". The horn must be "continuous and uniform and not strident". However, one of the exceptions is "if the purpose thereof is to prevent theft or attempted theft of the vehicle or its contents"....

I think it might be illegal to have a two or more tone horn on your vehicle
but then so is car jacking
personal alarms are legal and very loud. I think the Colonel Bogey kind might just generate rolled eyes and curses rather than assistance.
This stuff is legal too Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation

Make of that what you will, but I think you might get away with it as an attack alarm only...not the normal car horn.

yes
no one will know it is loud until you use it

so long as you arent the family who want to indicate left and shift it into second gear .... or windscreen wipers
sdeean has given you chapter and verse ( thx sdd! )
make that of what you will - - -
it is clear that you can do the horn

( so long as you dont say - ooo my grandchild, he loves it when I barp it when I arrive!)

woofgang, the window would have to be wound down to use that spray. It's a useful tool, though :)

You'd need 5 air horns, PP. I have the set left over from the 70s, yes, that annoying sod was me. I'm a changed man, honestly :)
This is what you need:

We used to have a portable air horn on the yacht we sailed. Renewable gas canister and available in ships chandlers or on-line I would guess.

Gizmonster, I've just ordered it! :D

Years ago there was a car parked on the high street local to me and if anyone got too close the alarm went off and a voice boomed out, 'stand back, stand back, you are too close to this vehicle, stand back'.

Needless to say everyone was deliberately setting it off :D
Your friends should bear in mind that it is an offence to sound a motor horn between the hours of 11.30pm and 7am or while stationary.
If I was being attacked, Danny I wouldn't worry about that.
Neither would I Hoppy, but it is prudent to be aware of the law.

It wouldn't strictly be THE motor horn, danny. It would be an attack alarm :) The motor horn is still in place.
Anyway, if anyone complained to the police about it, so much the better if my wife was being attacked, don't you think?
If the motor horn is still in place then it might be better to carry a personal attack alarm.
