Very Loud Air Horn On Car For Safety?
21 Answers
Our friends were carjacked recently - a very nasty attack and my wife is becoming increasingly anxious about driving on her own at night.
Would it be legal to install an air horn (the sort that plays Colonel Bogey at a very high volume) to be used only in this sort of emergency? My thinking is that it would attract more attention than the standard car horn and might frighten any attackers off.

According to the Motor Vehicle Construction and Use regs 1986 (Clause 37 if you want to look it up), "no motor vehicle shall be fitted with a bell, gong, siren or 2 tone horn". The horn must be "continuous and uniform and not strident". However, one of the exceptions is "if the purpose thereof is to prevent theft or attempted theft of the vehicle or its contents"....

personal alarms are legal and very loud. I think the Colonel Bogey kind might just generate rolled eyes and curses rather than assistance.
This stuff is legal too Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation

Make of that what you will, but I think you might get away with it as an attack alarm only...not the normal car horn.

Gizmonster, I've just ordered it! :D
Years ago there was a car parked on the high street local to me and if anyone got too close the alarm went off and a voice boomed out, 'stand back, stand back, you are too close to this vehicle, stand back'.
Needless to say everyone was deliberately setting it off :D

If the motor horn is still in place then it might be better to carry a personal attack alarm.
