Historically they rated quite well although I preferred Vivitar at the time - they dont make lenses any more.
If you’re prepared to consider buying ‘used’ then this site is very good. Bought a used telephoto zoom and it’s pin sharp and condition was excellent:

Whenever I'm thinking of buying a new lens I wander down to the shop and ask to try it on my camera. Take a few shots at various focal length, aperture and distance settings and then go home and have a good look at the photos.
I also look at the website www.dpreview.com for information/reviews on cameras and lenses.
