Roaming Charges

How do roaming charges work in the EU?
Sailing on Thursday for a few days in Amsterdam and Antwerp, havnt got a clue about how roaming charges work. Will I need to put my mobile on airplane mode?
(Never been out of the country before with a mobile phone)

Nailit. That's data roaming which allows you to connect to the internet. If there isn't free wifi make sure data roaming is turned off or it'll use your credit.

Cant find anything on my phone about data roaming, just a 'mobile data' on/off button. Presumably that needs to be left off?

Mine says mobile data as well. Keep it off unless in a wifi zone.

I have just got Mr U to look at his Vodafone account, he made a call in Cyprus last week to a Cypriot number and there has not been any charge for it.

Prudie: perhaps you had run out of data allowance.
You still shouldn’t get charged roaming charges though. I also am with Vodafone.

Just leave mobile data off for your entire journey if you're worried, even if you're in a wifi zone. If you don't want to use mobile data, keep it off regardless.

You don't need to have mobile data on to be able to access wifi.

If you're worried about hidden charges, then use your phone as little as possible and only in an emergency. Then if there is a charge (doubtful there would be one) at least you know that the charge was worth it.

Only use your phone for pictures and you'll be golden.

Weird that...I've always had to put a password in to use free wifi.

Keep your mobile data switched off and use your phone in free wifi cafes and bars. You may have to pay for wifi if you use it on the ship. Check with the steward when you embark.

Yes if you overshoot your data allowance it can be expensive. Although with a data cap set your network should stop you doing that until you buy extra data, which is always a cheaper option than just letting it overrun.
By the way my phone is is now in flight mode and WiFi still works ..

No not pay for wifi on the cruise ship. It will be extortionate! It would be cheaper to use mobile data (if you could get any)

Ich, just put my flight mode on and it switched wifi off. BUT I could switch wifi back on and still stay in flight mode....

Flight mode will stop all wifi, mobile data, calls text, internet, Bluetooth, infrared, whatever, flight mode /aeroplane mode will stop all and any signals coming too or from the phone.

Yes you can switch WiFi back on in flight mode however when I put mine in flight mode WiFi stays connected.
I noticed this the other day.

Wifi will be available in flight mode - that's how you access airline onboard wifi

Yes but you should have to switch it back on, after it’s been initially disabled.
I’m not actually on a plane however. Perhaps it handles that.
