A guide dog is trained to go 'on command' usually at the same time and place each day. The signal is often a firm push on the lower back. It is very rare that a guide dog will vacate his bowels on the public highway without a person able to clear up.

Many of those who use guide dogs are not totally blind, so they can actually see what their dogs are doing. Those who are totally blind can tell what their dog is doing (when stationary) by running a hand over the animals back.

I walk a colleague’s guide dog once a week to let him have a run. We walk in a woodland area and he always craps in deep undergrowth where you couldn’t get to if you tried. I don’t use a command but I believe he does have one.

My best friend is a puppy trainer for Guide Dogs, it is her job to get them familiar with crowds, public transport and the like. I actually asked her this question, and yes they are trained to poop on command, if they cannot master this they will not go on to full guide dog training. If my friend is very lucky she gets to keep the pup (although she has never had this happen, yet), if they fail. She has been a trainer for over twenty years, and we both live in the town where Guide Dogs For The Blind was first started.

jordyboy you can use any word you like. I believe that guide dogs are trained in the centres as pups with the key phrase "busy busy" My own dogs who are not super well trained have been taught to go in the garden on request if they need to, both wee and poo depending on what they need. Its very useful if I am taking them out in the car for instance, to know that they have emptied before leaving home and also last thing at night.

jordy, some guide dogs respond to a firm push on the back. Other guide dogs respond to a verbal command such as 'potty time' or 'toilet time'. If the dog's owner is unable to see to pick up the mess usually a helper will do it. It is usual for the guide dog to 'go' in the owner's garden wherever possible so it is not a problem. Most often the dog's owner is able to clear it up himself, he knows exactly where the dog has done the business.

PD I used to know a puppy walker when we lived in Surrey but this was more than 20 years ago. I believe the dog failure rate which means that they are put up for adoption has reduced a lot since they started their own breeding program.

oh PS if anyone is thinking of training their dogs to go on request then do make sure that you choose a word or phrase that you will be happy to use in public or have your neighbours hear! I use "hurry up" because its what I would say anyway out there when its raining and freezing cold.

People who use guide dogs because they are partially sighted or blind are exempt from the anti-fouling laws and won't be fined if their dog does its business on the public highway. They don't have to clean up.

quite right barry, but before the anti dog brigade kicks off its worth pointing out that both the training establishment and the guide dog's owner go to great trouble to minimise the risk of this....as all dog owners should.
