Connecting Broken Ethernet Cable
11 Answers
Hi all, we have a very long Ethernet cable spanning the length of our house going from our main router to an extender. This cable has broken at one end. Obviously we can’t easily rewire the whole lot, but is there a way to change the end that is broken by putting a new connector plug on it?

As has been mentioned, this isn't a particularly difficult job so long as you a) know what you're doing and b) have the correct tool.

Sorry I should have added get a few connectors as you may not get a good connection on your first attempt at crimping. Just cut the bad one off and have another go, you will improve with practice.
Go on Youtube and search for fitting cat5 connector.. RJ45 or data cable crimping connector.
You will have too many to choose from .. it is easy but just a bit fiddly if you haven't done one before.
Good luck .. !

I am assuming that the cable is direct from the router and not part of a network that needs a crossover cable or connection. There are also two wiring configurations of either 8 wires or 6 wires. The 6 wire connections are mainly for voice data linkage only so I would think that you have the 8 wire cable. Without the crimping tools and a new Ethernet plug to fit it will be a tough refit, but this may help. The pin numbers 1 to 8 are left to right as you look at the ethernet plug with the little spur away from you. The colour codes of the internal wires are shown in the link. Good luck.

Should you want to do a better job and save buying a tool that you are unlikely to use again, why not use your cash to install a powerline adapter setup. This will do away with very long cat5 cable. With simple additions you can have data connection points in every room. Just plug them into any power outlet.
