> Mr Parish, who has represented Tiverton and Honiton in Devon since 2010, said it had been a "moment of madness". A moment? > He said the first time was accidental after looking at a tractor website, but the second time - in the House of Commons - was deliberate. What absolute horse droppings, both from the MP and from those that have been finding excuses for the...

Khandro - I think not, bit that's not the issue.

It's not illegal for MP's to have sex with each other - that doesn't mean they can have at it across the dispatch box at eleven in the morning!
AH, I think Khandro was responding to Sandra at 11:15 Sat.
I understand that if he had not closed his browser down then he could have been taken to the site if he had opened it elsewhere but it would not have been playing, he would have to opt in for it to play. ( Press the play button )

Or so i'm told.
^^ Many of them are texting during sittings, no one knows to whom or why, what's the difference?
Maybe they should be made to hand their phones in when they enter the building and collect them at home time, just like they do at my sons school ;o)
Khandro, if you don't know the difference between texting and watching pornography, I suggest you don't use your mobile in public!
In the interview i saw, it was the reporter who suggested the MP had opened it by accident. The MP then agreed that's what happened. Oh look, a flying pig:-/
sandra - // Just take his phone and have it looked at like they would a drug dealers, and they will see how many times he's logged into such sites. //

That could only be done if the gentleman is charged with a criminal offence, the police have the power to search for evidence.

Since he has not been charged, he cannot be compelled to surrender his phone, unless it is specifically supplied as a 'work phone', in which case it may be possible to recall and examine it.

The gentleman could of course volunteer his phone for examination, but given the circumstances thus far, that's highly unlikely to occur.

I said, 'what's the difference' in response to your:

"but what is a Member doing surfing when he is supposed to be listening to the business of the House?"

Either porn-watchers or texters (I'm neither, btw) are not listening to the business of the house.

And anyway, it's extremely bad manners to look at someone else's phone isn't it ? I wouldn't dream of doing so.
Child lock his phone .
No MP in the chamber of the House of Commons should be on their phone, for any reason - they should be listening to, and contributing to the proceedings of the House. If you watch television coverage of parliament, you see about half of members looking down at their phones.
I don't know what the worlds coming, next they will be having gaming chairs fitted so they can take their X boxes in to work:) Did I just say work?
13.10 It could be that they are completely bored with listening to the same old rubbish being spouted day after day. :)

Modern communications for important people mean that a constant stream of information and conversation is coming into MP's mobiles at all times.

In theory they should be paying attention, but they may argue that multi-tasking allows them to listen to the House, and to respond to urgent requests on their phones at the same time.

Therefore it is unlikely that a 'school' type ban on phones is going to gain any traction, and there are valid arguments why it should not.

The issue is an MP watching inappropriate material in an inappropriate setting, and that is what needs to be addressed.
Khandro - // I said, 'what's the difference' in response to your:

Since your post clearly confused naomi, and was not clear, the responsibility to ensure that people know to whom you are responding lies with yourself.
Well it happened to me years ago on a works computer during a coffee break! Looking up cottages!! I left it open and reported it to my boss
But my views are that accidents can happen and what were those doing that reported him other than spying?
pat - // But my views are that accidents can happen and what were those doing that reported him other than spying? //

Accidents can happen - opening a porn sight can be an accident, watching the contents without shutting down the site instantly, is not an accident.

As for the notion of other people watching - the set-up of the House means that anyone sitting behind anyone else can easily see their phone - that is not 'spying'.

All members accept that others can see their phones, but since they are engaged entirely on necessary constituency or House business that requires immediate attention, someone else seeing it is not going to be an issue.

But from reports thus far, this is not that, by a long way.

Much of the business of the House may be irrelevant to an individual member, it may neither effect them, nor their constituents, & he/she may have nothing to contribute & are waiting for another item on the agenda which does.
This is why, apart from PM's questions etc. the chamber is usually half empty.
Thats a very good point Khandro! I also wonder how many people on this thread are as virtuous as they make out to be, and can honestly say that they have never used their phones for non work stuff when they are bored. Would things be different if it wasn't porn?
