Is there a reason why calling a cable line starts with one long ring when you get through whereas BT lines ring in the traditional way? This is through the earpiece, not from the phone being called. I would guess it's just so people know who's on cable, especially when some plans offer free cable to cable calls, though in London the exchange usually gives it away anyway.

I'd put it down to the differences in equipment used. Cable companies tend to use slightly different exchange equipment to BT.
