I need a new balanced flue gas fire.  My local shop has advised that my existing'marble looking' fireplace is incompatible and I would need to have an electric fire instead.  I really want a gas fire but they've said I'd need a new fireplace  quoting me £3,800.  I don't understand as I already have a balanced flue gas fire in situ- any advice greatly appreciated thanks.

Sounds like they are trying to balance their books. :>)

How far is the surround away from the 'firebox'?  That's the outermost part of the gasfire casing.

Why have a gas fire, when electricity is much cheaper?

There is 15 inches of fireplace either side of the hotbox?

You need a minimum of 6" all around, plus a bit more if it sticks out a bit.

15" sounds like loads to me. I think the chap just freaked out when he saw the surround was flammable.

Go somewhere else I would say. ☺
