My Elderly Neighbours Recycling Wasn't Collected

What happens when the Council didn't collect the recycling for a neighbour I know who is elderly and has no way of taking it to the nearest recycling centre?

She rang to complain, and they just said to put out double the amount next week, but the poor lady hasn't got space for that much recycling waste.

Shes puzzled why they didn't take it as it was put out the night before, so no excuses to not collect it.

But what can she now do about so much waste, especially as it now won't all fit in the correct bags.

Taking things to the recycling tip is deliberately being made awkward. My council now expects everyone to book a time !!!! Scumbags. Slways was a case of simply turn up when convenient and no readon to change a working system. What if you find you have more than one load, or can't make the time ? And why the heck should you, it's bad enough the time wasted and...

we have a missed bins number to call - they usually pick it up the next day.

Normally we ring the waste department who log it as a missed picked up and arrange a further pick up.

Try ringing again but make sure you are contacting the correct department.

I did ring the waste collection team, but they said they would pick up double next week, but they haven't concidered that would require more recycling bags, and no where to store the waste for another week.

Try storing it on the council steps ?

One week? it takes me 6 or 8 weeks to accumulate enough to bother putting it out for collection.

Have you spoken to her local Councillor?

Wtf is she recycling that it couldn't wait for a week? You could be a good neighbour and take it for her

Davebro; What? No bottles, paper, plastic packaging, amazon boxes, tin cans, lager cans, cider bottles, newspapers?

We have loads of recycling stuff, and take it up daily to the bottle/paper bins a few yards up the road. But we only put a black bag out once a fortnight. Vegetable peelings etc go into the compost heap in our back yard.

I live in a block of 4 flats - yesterday's 2-weekly recycling collection consisted of one bag half full of paper/cardboard.

What on earth kind of an amount of recycling does an  elderly lady have that cant wait one extra week?? On the rare occasions our bin men miss someone they say to just leave your missed bins where they usually are put out & they will collect them the following day.

Can't you take it to the tip for her, or share it amongst your recycling and hers?

Most of my recycling is plastic milk bottles, we get through gallons of milk.

The problem is she doesn't have enough proper recycling bags to put everything in.

I think she tends to collect a fortnights worth and put it out so the bags are full.

But the problem now is she would need more bags, but no time now to order them, besides I think your only allowed so many bags to be put out, but I could be wrong.

I cant harbour her waste as we have quite a lot each week already.

Its not so long ago, probably a year ago we used to just put everything in black bags for the general waste collection.

They were encouraging everyone to recycle years ago, but no one I knew was doing it, but ironically they didn't collect this ladys recycling.

I can't take it to the dump on her behalf as you have to now make an appointment to take things to the dump, that just started a month ago, but I work all week.

And then the council wonders why fly tipping is on the increase, its little wonder in my opinion.

We (just two OAP's) have very little landfill waste, but loads of recycling waste. Mainly plastic packaging , also a daily newspaperand the occasional delivery box. Our little compost bin in the kitchen seems to get full very quickly with peelings, rhubarb leaves and so on, but I empty it into the outside compost bin every couple of days; lots of worms in there and I also put in sensitive documents like stuff with personal details - coffee grounds go on the garden.

Slways was a case of simply turn up when convenient and no readon to change a working system. What if you find you have more than one load, or can't make the time ? And why the heck should you, it's bad enough the time wasted and pollution caused by having to go to the tip in the first place when a regular refuse lorry should be picking everything up and leaving the containers in a reasonable pile afterwards.  One despairs at the authorities we have deliberately screwing up society.

Always...

Here here 👍

Where I am, there's very little provision for recycling. I'm in a 16 flat block of maisonettes. There is a rubbish store with 3 bins for black bags. Then there is another bin for cardboard, plastic etc. It's got a lid and a ridiculously small opening. I can't get a weeks worth of bagged tiny cat food tins in there...let alone most folded boxes. I'm elderly and going up and down the stairs multiple times with my rubbish is just not on some days.
