For a start, its added to the overall length (lets face it, its always difficult to judge where the string ends and the answer begins), and on top of that the weight of the answer itself might have stretched the string, thereby making an accurate measurement all but impossible. Oh, I know the answer was short and fairly lightweight, but just as even light itself has mass (as Einstein proved), so even the most inoffensive and harmless looking answer has a measureable weight. I suggest the only way this could be counteracted is if you hauled your answer high above the Earth (with the string dragging along in its wake) to where the gravitational pull becomes negligible. Up there, the weight of your answer would cease to be a factor and Potterfan would once again be in a position to go ahead and, with any luck, accurately measure the string.
The only problem then would be getting Potterfan into a suborbital rendezvous with the string for long enough to perform the measurement. And of course getting his mum to let him go string measuring that high on a weekday evening when hes got to be up early for school in the morning.
